This book examines the stories of creation as found in the Torah and Christian Bible. However, it is written specifically for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, drawing from additional Latter-day Saint scripture and authority. Our understanding of ancient scripture is almost always skewed by our own historical and cultural situation, by our own modern preoccupations. We must situate our scriptural texts among the ancient languages, cultures, and literary devices of their writers, always remembering that these texts were written in an epoch vastly different from our own, for an audience immeasurably different from ourselves. This is no more important than when studying the ancient stories of creation. We must read them in their proper historical-cultural context.
